What if video game reviews weren't rushed out the door to meet a game's launch date? What if some brave soul could take their time and do a really deep dive on a game's strengths, weaknesses, history and themes? That's me, Nick Raven! Welcome to The Nth Review, a documentary-style review series where I do just that. There are no provisional scores or skimmed surfaces here, I evaluate a game from head to tail and give you the most detailed evaluation possible.
Please send beta requests, demos, evaluation copies to the e-mail below. Note: I probably won't cover it, but if I like it I'll make sure to mention it.

I agree with your take! I'd say the general urbanist UA-cam channel's role is not to actually make changes happen but to change the way people think about cities and transportation. The propaganda fed to people starting in their childhood is already so hard to move past in north America. I live in a moderate sized Canadian city and like everyone else here, I was so excited to get my driver's license in highschool, then I started driving daily and driving like an dumb ignorant teenager does. I got into urbanism because of not just bikes only in university, I then moved on to more data and solution based channels like City nerd and now I have started getting involved and volunteering in local bike advocacy groups in my own city, ditching my car as my primary mode of transport. I don't think I could have done all that without urbanism on UA-cam and I'm eternally grateful for what I learnt and the positive impacts it provides. I also agree that I need to continue to engage with my city in meaningful ways, hopefully as my career progresses I'll have more time to show up to the council meetings in person and do my part.
I miss UGO just because they used to have a "superhero creator" on the sight, it was the only thing I ever used it for but it was cool.
I just remember some kids in high school had merch with the logo. I had no reason to ever go to the site.
🤣😂🤣👎🏽
Well I see one more major problem with those chanels. Ouside About Here form Vancouver all are close minded on ideal unreal situation. Tere is just X people wants to bike ect. Urbanism needs balance, not going from one extrime (Car dependent) to another (getto style). And I know what i mean by that, i live in Warsaw 🙄
TAKE ME HOOOOOOOOME I WANNA GOOOOOOOO
My problem with modern remakes is the color palette. Take a look at Doom in 1993. You would not be able to confuse enemies or level elements. Doom 3? Monsters practically look the same color as the level and they all share the same bulky design. In this case look at the old System Shock 1. You can clearly see if there is a door because it pops out, same goes for items, platforms etc. In the remake? Is it a door? Is it part of a wall? Is it just an ornamental lighting piece? Everything looks this bluish / sometimes reddish haze.
I agree with this. With limited colors, they used more of them because they ran the entire gamut. Nowadays they can get all the colors they need out of a small slice of it. It's why I cherish the color choices of games whenever I can.
I have figured it out, am going to study civil engineering next year. Like Thanos said: "Fine, I will do it myself."
I didn't think about it when I played the remake, but after watching this I realize that I completely agree about cyber space.
Why does a person who completely gives up on the future of their city even have kids. I feel like the whole point of spending energy to make things better, even when it's tough is because you know it'll be good for future generations. Those tweets really suck
Haven't watched the review yet but. Prey 2017 was my goty of 2017. I was waiting for prey 2 for years and it managed to overcome my grudge salt. It's arkanes best game imo. It's not like bioshock at all and it's better than it in every way imo. Mooncrash is my all time favourite expansion. I'm very sad Microsoft hates talant.
They shot themselves in their foot for no reason
Starfield is not a space game tho. It's an open world Bethesda rpg set in space. Skyrim in space. X4, no man's sky, elite dangerous, star point Gemini, rebel Galaxy those are space game
I appreciate your transparency and reasonable points/thinking. I like the message you’re trying to get across. I also felt that not just bikes never spoke the whole picture. You cant just bulldoze the unwalkable neighbors for walkable ones just like they did for cars. You cant use imminent domain and just take people’s property from them to create high density.
Thank you for this video!
why is strong towns on this list? their whole thing is Doing Something. They have local groups that they support so that there is a clear step 2 on how to make things better. Strong Towns is like the blueprint of how to make urban planning youtube better
Their web site does this, their UA-cam channel less so, at least, until this video started making waves.
@@NthReview valid 👍
Top 5 all time. Arkane austin is gone but at least they made a classic.
This is my biggest issue with urbanist and by extension a lot of progressive politics. Pie in the sky, and no ability to compromise.
There's really nothing pie in the sky about effective multimodal transportation, especially since our car dependency came because of uncompromising regressivism and corporate cronyism. Undoing all the damage of car dependency will take decades to accomplish and require plenty of gradual steps, but an inability to compromise or realism aren't why.
I cried a few times during this. Thank you.
A majority of the urbanists you've mentioned have brought up getting involved in local politics and activism.
In small ways and in passing, yes and increasingly so after this video released. But the content many seem to be looking for is what I'm building on my second channel, Nth City, which is pinned in the comments.
That's a valid point, that we never see anyone who is actually in charge of doing something. Maybe because creators can't identify such people? Why no "US and Canada" municipal official, or even election candidate does not have a pressure to have 12 s in NJB?
The game still has potential to be improved, but they need to actually improve the game or it will be forgotten.
I don’t know why I haven’t played this yet. I think I was always turned off by the modern sequels. I never found them to be appealing. Everyone says the original is the best one though.
As someone who's been following Gerstmann and crew since about 2004 from the On the Spot days, much of what you deliniate here lines up almost exactly with my own experiences. These things were lost to memory as my relationship with the site began to wane in the year or so leading up to the pandemic. The site going completely remote in 2020 was pretty much where it ended for me. This video feels like a nice bit of closure on a thing I spent a large chunk of my life being absorbed by. Outstanding work.
It is not the job of a guy making videos to set up detailed how-to's for thousands of regions in multiple different countries on what to do! An HVAC or science channel will not go into details on how to set up shop, hire an employee and file for patents either. If people get the idea that them disliking noisy car-logged streets is not a "them issue", some will hopefully look into their local options. Either by joining a local bike club, or finding their referent for public infrastructure. And this first step, the "you are not alone" is important enough. There is no problem here.
That's not what I asked them to do. I asked for the minimum diligence in moving viewers from information to action and based on the responses, upvotes and changes in the content in these creators, this has rung loud and clear.
My favourite part other than dialogue has got be how much character builds change the game and how limited they are: out of the 18 skills, you can only max out 2. And that's assuming you hyper-specialise This means you will complete tasks very differently than other builds. Example: A few factory workers went on strike--asking for better pay. You can: 1. High hacking skill + moderate intimidation skill: Hack into boss computer and blackmail her 2. High persuasion and completed a job for her: convince her to give workers better pay 3. High lying skill: Lie to workers by telling them that they are easily replaceable 4. High lockpicking skill: Steal worker savings and force them to go back to work In case it wasn't clear, I love this game
Yeah, go check out my full review if you haven’t already!
Immersive sims are the best types of games IMO. Prey is in my top 5 best games of all time.
Whining and negativity sells better and generates more clicks. Everyone is gonna watch a video which describes in colorful language how cars bad public transport good, but very few will watch a video full of technical terms and bureaucracy that will actually show what results can be achieved if you take an action and how to take said action. Plus, if commenting on issues is what keeps your channel afloat, resolving said issues will put you out of a very lucrative job.
This was constructive criticism.
The Netherlands is the worst model for walkable cities and good cycling infrastructure. Also the rail system is disgusting. The filthiest trains I have ever seen.
I looked up the studios, they were bought by Zenimax on the cheap because they were failing studios. Surprised they lasted this long.
18:40 a lot of people hate ss1 audio and music, i really like it bc it carries a lot of the cyberpunk-feeling for me.
Talos 1 every area have story whats before typhon outbreak/or while in outbreak/something happens makes them unique you progress the talos 1
I don't understand why spoilt cunts trash talk this game. Its great. Number 2 is gunna be better again. Its a new IP the first one is gunna be abit like this especially if under funded. Its impressive to br honest
Rip Arkane :( I'm new to imsims but have played 3 now. I was excited for sytem shock 3 :'(
Having a voice protagonist always seem to make characters creation pointless to me. When playing mass effect or fallout 4. Your playing shepherd or Nate/nora there really there own character, so not really any different then playing a normal protagonist like Gerald from Witcher series (yes I play the default look). A voice protagonist really hurt the role play in rpg though that for sure.
What makes Starfield so bad is that quickly becomes a chore to play at all points of its gameplay loop.
I believe some of the critics have valid points but mostly I think that nowadays we have a negativity problem in gaming. Shitting on something gets more clicks than saying you like it. I feel that gamers almost pray on the downfall of most triple AAA games and cant wait to tweet out a response or meme of Todd Howard. Nobody just wants to talk about their hobby in a positive light, they want to trash something then dance on its grave. Its very sad to me. Again starfield could have been alot better but I played it for what it was and enjoyed it. I think more people need be less critical and not just join in on the masses repeating a negative message because its the "cool" thing to do.
old skool gaming yess
36:16 sorry to break this nwes to your past self but it's 2024 and we have neither Elder Scrolls 6 nor Fallout 5 and there's no release date for any of them on sight
Le sigh
has to be the best video i\ve seen in a while now
Well be sure to subscribe to my channel, Nth City! It's in the pinned comment!
Cuz morrowinds bigger lol every time their team gets bigger the game gets smaller and more balls.
I can’t imagine choosing to play a dialog heavy game based in lore based world where combat is virtually an option and make a 2+ hour video basically saying that theirs too much dialog and lore and not enough combat.
The problem is that the dialogue is a drag and lore-heavy compared to other games with really good dialogue systems.
The 5 minute craft music 😂
I loved this prey than the Bethesda’s reboot
Arkane’s Prey wasn’t a reboot, it was an original game that Bethesda told them to use the same name for.
It felt like one of the big nails in the coffin was the end of E3. Those were always some of the greatest episodes. I started loosing interest after I didn't have those games to look forward to.
There is a guy on russian youtube named - Vlad Surin. In his series he literally replaned whole streets and made concept art to show that it is possible to make very good streets out of fd up russian ones. Unfourtuenatly he moved to Georgia and does not make this content that often anymore(
If anyone has any other videos like this on giant bomb and early gamestop years, please feel free to share. Finding this video is amazing as it was exactly what i was looking for.
I actually really loved the maze element of this game. I kinda wish they had made another thief game instead of system shock but it’s still really great
